| James Holman |
| James Holman is an intriguing young character from the countryside east of Melbourne. Having just completed a Masters of Arts in International Relations and European Studies at the Central European University with a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship he has returned to Australia with a mind to tackle new challenges and embrace new opportunities. His main interests are ‘development through education’ and sees that the model of individual empowerment through training at a primary, secondary and tertiary level is essential for the future and success not only of communities in developing countries but also for minority groups within developed countries. He has a background of living and studying in Melbourne at Deakin University where he discovered his interest and aptitude in political science and international affairs. From this background he has gained extensive experience in assisting and advocating for the rights of refugee communities in Sydney and Melbourne and has lived with the East-Arnhem Land Aborigines where he taught computers and reported on first hand the severe degradation he observed of services that the Australian government provides to these rural Aboriginal communities. Although having travelled and experienced much in the world, having lived and studied in Washington DC, and had the honour to design a university’s new iconic logo in Thailand he sees his greatest professional success as working in the Solomon Islands in conflict resolution and community strengthening. Here he was able to manage an AusAid funded project which assisted communities through providing training and support in areas of literacy, conflict resolution mentoring, agricultural farm modelling, youth and health events and small business management training. He enjoys getting out there and seeing and meeting new and interesting people who also have a commitment to improving their own lives through the empowerment of others, and seeks in his future career to example to others the Rotary idiom that – Service is Self. |
